Do you want to get rid of that dry and itchy skin? Chia seed oil is the solution!

Chia is derived from the Mayan word for "strength" for a reason

Chia Seed Oil / Salvia Hispanica Chia seed oil (or, more formally known as salvia hispanica seed oil) is - you guessed it - extracted from the seeds of the chia plant. Chia is a powerful source of fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols and antioxidants, such as caffeic acid, rosemary acid, myricetin and quercetin. Because chia seed oil is so versatile, it offers benefits for all skin types. Here's how this nutrient-rich ingredient can improve skin:

Hydrates skin: Chia seed oil is rich in emollients, making it an effective moisturizer and works to soften skin and improve skin barrier function.

Protects against free radical damage: The strong antioxidant properties of chia seed oil help protect the skin from oxidative damage and free radicals (which play an important role in skin aging) due to aggressive environmental factors, such as UV radiation or pollution.

Increases skin hydration: Not only can chia seed oil help hydrate the skin, but it can also reduce transepidermal water loss.

Is an antioxidant ingredient: Chia seed oil has strong antioxidant properties and is full of very beneficial ingredients for the skin.

Rich in fatty acids: When used in skin care, chia seed oil is particularly beneficial because of its composition of fatty acids. It contains linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acid) and more than 60 percent alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3 fatty acid), which is one of the highest for any plant source.

Packed with essential nutrients and vitamins: Chia seeds are rich in protein, magnesium, zinc, boron, calcium, potassium, iron, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins B, D & E (just to name a few!).

Benefits for your hair: Chia seed oil also has many benefits for your hair. Its moisturizing properties help nourish and condition, leaving hair cleansed and smooth. By nourishing the roots, hair looks silky and feels shiny and healthy.

But what about chia seeds for hair growth? Chia seeds contain up to 20% protein, which is essential for healthy hair growth. Chia is derived from the Mayan word for "strength" for a reason: 60% of the seed consists of omega 3 fatty acids. Chia seed oil is said to provide a 3:1 ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 essential fatty acids to the skin, scalp and hair. What makes this so important is that our bodies are unable to produce their own omega 3 fatty acids. So the only way to get the powerful effects of omega 3s is to administer and eat them.

Apart from the skin benefits, part of what makes this ingredient so great to include in cosmetic formulas is that it is very stable, and it is also resistant to oxidation.
